Birdi 4 Jemma
February 2012 - Welcome Back
Wednesday, 15 February 2012 10:37

Welcome back to all my friends and supporters.  I trust you all had a successful year, a joyous Christmas and may you all stick to your New Year’s resolutions!  I have high hopes for 2012 as I am down 10kgs, down 2 pants sizes and am sporting a new summer hair cut...shave...or something!

The year 2011 has been like no other in my life. The highlight - the birth of our second son, Blake Callyn, on the 6th of April 2011. The rest of the year however, I was out of action as I had to undergo an operation in January to re attach the tendon to my bone, near the elbow.  I have to admit there was a serious amount of pain, but not as bad as not being able to touch a club for 7 months!!  Progress after that was rather slow as I was literally hitting 20 balls three times a week.  Once I had loosened up the muscles I moved to playing twice a week and no more to be able to strengthen the tendon slowly.  By September I had moved up to 3 and 4 rounds per week.  I was hoping to start playing again in November, but due to the doctor’s recommendations, I had to hold out for 2012.  My twice weekly sessions with my Sports Therapist have been invaluable in getting the arm in tip top shape again.

I faced my first tournament tee box this year at the Africa Open.  Oddly enough it was the very same tournament I had to withdraw from due to my injury!  Nerves were not nearly as bad as I had anticipated, but certainly showed in the first 3 holes played.  I was 2 over after 3.  I could have thrown the ball in for less.  I signed for a 1st round score of 74(one over), all things considered not too bad being the first one back.  After the 1st round, I was lying 138th and knew I had to shoot low or move on.  I spent the evening having dinner with family and was in high spirits despite lying no- where.  The second day started off and no matter what I did nothing dropped and I ended up 1 over through 7.  The next 11 holes however were a just what I had been praying for.  I made 6 birdies and an eagle on the 3rd to make the cut with one to spare!  Saturday morning however dawned with me worried sick to my stomach.  I must have slept in an odd position, because I could hardly move my arm.  I hurried myself off to physio to find out that I had a pinched nerve in my shoulder.  I managed to swing the club literally one handed on follow through the whole day and finished up with a 75 (2 over)which I happily accepted.  The final round on Sunday was still painful, but at least I could swing it properly.  I finished up 3 under for the event and tied 75th.

Tournament 2 – the Joburg Open and The Royal Johannesburg and Kensington CC was as always beautiful.  My arm was sorted and I was look forward to it.  Unfortunately a shocking start on the tougher East Course (4 over after 5 and 5 over after 7) stunted my chances, but I did manage to pull it back slightly and finish 3 under in the last 11 holes.  The 2nd round, afternoon tee off saw me level through 5 before the Joey’s thunderstorms rolled in.  We were called off for the day and resumed at 06h30 the next day.  I finally signed for a 1 under, but missed the cut by 4 shots.

The last couple of weeks have been filled with focused training and tee off’s at 06h00.  I have also gotten involved with the Humewood Thursday School, a great bunch of guys and friendly competitiveness.

Next on the Sunshine Tour list is Di Data, starting on the 16th of Feb at Fancourt.  We play Montague, Outeniqua and The Links for the first 3 round and back to Montague for the last round.  Three of the best courses in the country and they do reward good ball striking, so let’s hope for the best.  From there I will continue on to Johannesburg for the Telkom PGA.

I have the faith to believe that my return home will be a victorious one, which will lend extra celebrations to my next project.

The 2nd Birdi 4 Jemma – Titch Moore Classic will be held on the 3rd of April 2012!  We are already full steam ahead with the organising and once again our main prize will be a spot at the Vodacom Origins at Simola (which includes accommodation, meals and 3 rounds of golf with 2 pro’s).  Three of my fellow pro’s will be there to entertain, raise funds and assist off the tee’s and  I will be able to actively participate this year too.  The day is ended off with a gala dinner with live music and auction with some elite items that have already started coming in.  Last year we had a full field, so to avoid disappointment, book now!  All the information will be accessible by clicking on the Birdi 4 Jemma tab.  For those who cannot make it and would like to start supporting my charity, please download the pledge forms for this seasons birdie pledges.

Before I go, I have to thank Tavcor MotoRent for assisting with my car rental for the summer section of the Sunshine Tour.  I BIG congratulations to my buddy Lyle Rowe for an awesome start to the season, and I look forward to seeing him continue in this vein.  Also to Louis and Gracie (Brandon Grace) for their wins in the opening events of this year!

I look forward to seeing you all on the fairways, tee’s, greens and hopefully at The Titch Moore Classic!  Till then.....Happy Golfing!

Birdi 4 Jemma - Feb 2011

As some of you might have heard, it seems my season has come to a halt for a few months.  I have removed the tendon from the bone in my elbow and have had to go ‘under the knife’ again.  My op was done on the 14th of January and it looks like I will only be back in action again around October or November of this year.

I have decided to use this break wisely and get myself back into shape.  I have the help of a great physio, who will get me right in the fitness department and assist with the rehab on my arm.

I would like to thank everyone who has supported “Birdi 4 Jemma”, but as you might have noticed, the injuries have affected my performance for the last year.  The number of birdies were a little less than I had anticipated, but at least it was a start.  Unfortunately the Northern Lights School will no longer be one of the beneficiaries due to the fact that we have not been able to get a response from them.

I am pleased to announce that the date for The Titch Moore Classic has been confirmed.  The golf day will be held on the 31st March 2011, as the gala event to hand over the cheque to Jemma in person.  I have been able to arrange some great prizes and a few surprises, so should anyone be interested in participating in the golf day, please feel free to give me a call or email me.  (082 990 7236, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. On the family front, all is going well.  Tremond is growing cuter by the day and his baby brother “Blake” will be joining us within the next 2 months or so.

Happy Golfing.....’cos I can’t Smile

Ola everyone!

I am pleased to announce that Birdi 4 Jemma has kicked of nicely. In the first 2 events, I have managed 22 birdies and 3 eagles. Thanks to all our pledgers that have joined this wonderful cause. The first tournament out was at Humewood. I thought it was a good solid start returning from an injury and I finished 7 under par and tied 14th. The playing was solid but it seemed none of the putts wanted to fall. Congratulations to Humewood with the new greens and few changes to the golf course. My fellow pro's and I were very impressed. I felt really sorry for my amateur playing partners who finished 6th to miss the Origins final by one spot. I'd also like to send a big thank you to John Els of Tavcor Motorent for the sponsored car provided for the week.

Selborne the following week was a bit of a nightmare. I had the pleasure of playing with 5FM DJ Sasha Martinengo (jammiest man nearest the pin I have ever seen) and Sharks vice president Gary. We were all a bit dodgy but a good time was had by all. GO SHARKS!

I am off the Ndola, Zambia this week. My first ever win on tour was there and I finished 2nd there last year too. Lots of good vibes and I thoroughly enjoy the layout, so I am looking forward to a good week. Let the birdies flow!

PS. Should you wish to become one of our pledgers, please feel free to click on the Charity tab, read all about our beneficiaries and fil out our pledge form. Its for a good cause!

Happy New Year!

Compliments of the season to everyone, and I hope you all had a festive Christmas and enjoy a prosperous New Year.  As many of you know, my season didn’t finish off really well.  It seems that after my ‘tennis elbow’ operation, I was not able to get back to full playing form, and on top of that I have now been told that I have pulled my tendon off the bone which means another operation asap.  I have however been continuing to remain confident and attempting to achieve a result in the summer section of this tour.

The new year for me will entail giving it my best shot for the last 5 events and getting the operation over and done with so that I can get into the full swing of rehab on my arm.  It will mean some time off tour, but I know it will be time well spent preparing for a roaring comeback.

Once again I want to thank you all for the support you have shown me and the cause.  We did not quite achieve the results that we were expecting but have done well considering it is our first year out.   Should any of our supporters feel that they, or anyone they know, could further help the fundraising with donations of any kind, we would accept them with gratitude.  Please do keep an eye on the website as we will still be announcing the Grand Finale Golf Day for the handing over of funds raised.  Details will follow by the end of the month.

Wishing you all a great start to 2011....
